Catching Fire PDF is the second book in Suzanne Collin’s worldwide bestselling young adult dystopian trilogy The Hunger Games. Released in 2009 by Scholastic, it deals with the adventures of Katniss Everdeen after winning the 74th Hunger Games along with Peeta Mellark. As they have changed what happens to the biggest event in Panem (the book’s dystopian equivalent to North America) in the first book, by having two winners, Katniss and Peeta have to deal with the consequences of their rebellion. Though they have been declared victors and escaped death in the games, they must now face their fame as victors. Seen as the shakers of their hopeless society, they have changed the way the ordinary citizen views the world they live in. This change, however, wasn’t welcomed by President Snow after seeing the multiple show of rebellion in the different Districts while the victors were going on their Victory Tour.
The tension rose further when plans for the 75th Hunger Games, also known as the 4th Quarter Quell were announced. Instead of picking the tributes from each district through an annual reaping ceremony, the tributes were chosen from the pool of living victors. This situation put Katniss Everdeen, Peeta Mellark and their mentor Haymitch Abernathy’s life in danger as two of them would have to face the arena once again. On the day of the reaping, being the only living female tribute from District 12 gave Katniss the disadvantage. To save Katniss, Peeta volunteered in behalf of their mentor Haymitch who was unstable and old. As the preparations for the games are in full swing back in Panem, the duo and their mentor do their best to train as they will be going against seasoned killers.
However, the people Katniss and Peeta meet before the actual games don’t all seem to be seasoned killers. Most of them seemed to have the same misfortune as them— people thrown into the arena for fun. Before and during the games Katniss discovers something about the whole system. What people were scared of can be tampered with. The book invites us to discover whether Katniss and the other tributes will discover what it is that will change the games forever. It is a journey to knowing who is friend or foe, what is true and false.
